There are a lot of… ‘alternative facts’... surrounding mold, but we have the right information to keep your house mold free, and your family safe
‘Black mold’ might be the most overused and misunderstood phrase of our industry. Mold in general is a largely misunderstood issue. The issue with mold, is that it likes environments that we largely like, and as a result will grow where we want to be, or in environments we make. There are molds with harmful effects, and regardless of its potential to cause harm all mold should be treated the same, and treated by professionals. Here are some facts about mold to counter some of the mythology surrounding it.
Your basement has never flooded, and it doesn’t really matter anyway.
We’ve spoken previously about the importance of proper basement maintenance. Beyond this, the basement is a leading source of mold for a few reasons. Firstly, it is easily forgotten. Secondly, cardboard boxes storing materials, and materials within those boxes are likely targets for mold growth with the damp and cool atmosphere.
Using bleach to kill mold
Bleach may be a powerful disinfectant, and do well at killing bacteria: but it is not a good avenue for mold removal. Mold grows roots within materials it is growing on, and bleach will not penetrate those materials. Water from the bleach solution can penetrate, and leave the material with water for further mold growth.
A Clean and odor free home is mold free
Visible dirt has almost nothing to do with mold growth, mold will most likely grow in least trafficked places, and where you least expect it. In the same vein, even though mold produces an odor that is often musty, just because you do not smell this odor does not mean your home is mold free. Not all mold produces odor, and if it does produce an odor, it is not necessarily in an area with airflow that would allow you to smell it.
